Electric Wheelchair Weight Guide: Why It Matters More Than You Think

When most people start shopping for an electric wheelchair, they focus on price, battery life, and maybe the top speed. Weight is often an afterthought — something they notice on the spec sheet but don't fully think through until the chair arrives and they're trying to lift it into the boot of a car.

We've spoken to thousands of customers over the years, and weight is consistently one of the things people wish they'd paid more attention to before buying. This guide explains exactly why it matters, what the numbers actually mean in real life, and how to figure out which weight range is right for you.

Why does an electric wheelchair's weight matter?

An electric wheelchair serves two purposes: it carries you, and at some point, someone has to carry it.

Whether that's lifting it into a car boot, getting it into an aircraft hold, loading it into a taxi, or just navigating a tight doorway, the weight of the chair affects your independence in ways that go well beyond the seat itself.

Here are the situations where weight becomes the deciding factor:

Car travel. This is the big one. Most of our customers transport their chair in a car at least occasionally — whether that's for hospital appointments, visiting family, or days out. A chair that weighs 26kg requires two people and a fair amount of effort to lift into a standard car boot. A chair that weighs 13.8kg can often be managed by one person, or by the user themselves if they have upper body strength. That difference is the difference between independence and reliance on others being available.

Air travel. If you want to take your chair on a plane, most airlines require the battery to be removed and stowed in the cabin. That means the chair goes in the hold as checked luggage, and its weight counts toward your baggage allowance. Beyond the practicalities, lighter chairs are simply easier to handle in busy airports and abroad. Several of our chairs are specifically designed to be airline-friendly — more on those below.

Storage and handling at home. Not every user will store their chair in the same room they use it. Folding it and moving it between rooms, getting it in and out of a garage, or lifting it over a door threshold — all of this is easier when the chair is lighter.

Day-to-day manoeuvrability. Heavier chairs tend to have a slightly larger turning radius and can feel more cumbersome indoors. If you're spending a lot of time navigating tight spaces — a small kitchen, a narrow hallway, a busy high street — a lighter, more compact chair will serve you better.

Understanding the numbers: frame weight vs total weight

One thing worth knowing before you compare specs: manufacturers often quote frame weight separately from total weight (which includes the battery).

At MobilityPlus+, we always try to be clear about this distinction. For example, the Nova has a 19kg frame weight, while the InstaSplit quotes a 13.35kg lifting weight — the lightest section when split in two for easier loading. Always check which figure you're looking at, especially when comparing across brands.

As a general rule:

  • Under 15kg - exceptionally light. Typically carbon fibre construction. Easy for one person to handle and ideal for frequent travellers.
  • 15–20kg - lightweight. Manageable for most adults and a good balance of portability and build quality.
  • 20–26kg - mid-range. Perfectly usable but you'll likely want two people for regular lifting in and out of a car.
  • 26kg+ - heavier duty. Built for users who need higher load capacity or more robust construction. Less portable but no less capable.

Our range by weight: which chair suits your lifestyle?

Here's a practical breakdown of our electric wheelchair range, from lightest to heaviest:

For frequent travellers and those prioritising maximum portability

MobilityPlus+ ExoGlide — 14kg frame weight — £1,349.99 Our lightest full-featured powerchair. The ExoGlide is built from carbon fibre and designed specifically for people who need a chair that's as easy to transport as it is to use. The airline-friendly lithium battery can be carried in the aircraft cabin, and at 14kg the frame can be lifted by most adults without assistance. If you travel regularly — whether that's abroad, by train, or simply in and out of the car daily — this is the chair to consider.

MobilityPlus+ Featherlite Carbon Edition — 13.8kg frame weight — £1,299.99 Fractionally lighter than the ExoGlide, the Featherlite Carbon Edition combines premium carbon fibre construction with an exceptionally compact folded profile. Like the ExoGlide, it features an airline-friendly battery and is designed to fold in seconds. An outstanding choice for anyone for whom maximum portability is the top priority.

MobilityPlus+ InstaSplit — 13.35kg lifting weight — £899.99 The InstaSplit takes a different approach to portability: rather than being one ultra-light unit, it splits into two sections — the heaviest of which weighs just 13.35kg. This makes it ideal for users who need genuine independence when loading a car, without the premium price tag of a full carbon fibre build. If you regularly travel alone and need to load your own chair, the InstaSplit deserves serious consideration.

MobilityPlus+ LiteRider Carbon Edition — 16kg frame weight — £829.99 A strong mid-range option for those who want the weight advantages of carbon fibre construction at a more accessible price point. Airline-friendly battery included, and at 16kg it's well within the range most adults can handle solo.

For everyday use with occasional travel

MobilityPlus+ Axion — 18.3kg frame weight — £799.99 The Axion sits in the sweet spot between portability and value. Brushless motors mean it's smooth and quiet in daily use, and at 18.3kg it's light enough to load into most car boots without too much difficulty. A great all-rounder.

MobilityPlus+ Nova — 19kg frame weight — £999.99 Our best-selling powerchair. The Nova balances weight, build quality, and features better than almost anything at this price point. Available in five colours including Electric Blue, Deep Purple, and Inferno Red, it's also the most personalised option in our range. At 19kg it's comfortably manageable with one person for most loading situations.

MobilityPlus+ Featherlite — 18.7kg including battery — £699.99 Our most affordable lightweight option. The Featherlite gives you the core benefits of a light, foldable electric wheelchair without the carbon fibre premium. At under £700, it's consistently one of our most popular entry points into the range.

For users who need higher load capacity

MobilityPlus+ RangerXL — 160kg load capacity — £839.99 The RangerXL is built for users who need a higher weight limit without sacrificing portability entirely. With a 700W motor and 160kg load capacity, it's one of the most capable chairs in its class. Available in six colours.

MobilityPlus+ FortisHD — 180kg load capacity — £999.99 Our highest-capacity folding electric wheelchair. The FortisHD is built for heavier users who still want the convenience of a folding design. Two lithium batteries mean excellent range, and the wide seat provides genuine comfort for extended use.

A practical checklist before you decide

Before choosing based on weight alone, ask yourself:

Who will be loading the chair? If it's just you, lighter is almost always better. If you regularly have a helper available, you have more flexibility.

What's your car situation? A higher boot (like an SUV or estate) is significantly easier to load than a low hatchback. If you drive a smaller car, weight becomes even more important.

Do you travel by air? If yes, you need a chair with an airline-friendly battery — not all lithium batteries qualify. The ExoGlide, Featherlite Carbon Edition, Nova, and LiteRider Carbon Edition all meet this requirement.

What's your load capacity requirement? This is non-negotiable — always confirm the chair's maximum load capacity exceeds your weight before anything else.

What's your budget? Carbon fibre construction costs more. The ExoGlide and Featherlite Carbon Edition are genuinely exceptional chairs, but the Nova and Axion offer outstanding value at a lower price point with only marginally higher weight.
